Based on Circe by Madeline Miller
Do you regret it? I ask.
Never, you say.
Would you go back and change something? I ask.
No, you say.
Even if it would spare you from your pain? I ask.
Pain is human, you say.
You are not human, I think. You hear it as clearly as if it was spoken aloud. But there is no answer that I will understand, so you choose to bleed out in serene silence.
Its focus on suffering, regret, and the gap between human and non-human understanding drew me in. The most noticeable difference between stated and unspoken thoughts was the amount of emotion that was expressed with such little words. The main point of the poem is that suffering is a necessary component of being human and should be accepted rather than avoided. A key takeaway from this short reading is that at times you have to silently accept pain instead of erasing because stuff happen in your life for a reason and there is a lot you can learn from your suffering.

This poem, is short but has a lot of meaning behind it, it draws attention to the meaning of human and non human as well as regret in a persons life. The idea that this poem is trying to tell us is that pain, regret and anything else a person experiences through their lifetime is simply part of life there isn’t an instance where a person lives without problems but instead learns to live with them. in reality it isn’t nonhuman to not have regrets because everyone makes mistakes they’re simply unavoidable but as humans we have to learn from them instead of letting them drown us. Pain, suffering etc. they are all a component of life and there is instances where we have to accept that pain and take it in with silence in order for us to learn, which can really mean something beautiful at the end of the day.

This piece really spoke to me because it captures something real about life, that pain is not just something we suffer through, it’s part of what makes us human. The way the speaker keeps asking questions like “Do you regret it?” or “Would you go back and change something?” Just shows that deep down, we all wish we could undo pain, especially pain we haven’t gotten over But the answer, “Pain is human,” flips that idea completely. It made me think about how pain isn’t just a weakness or a problem it’s proof that we care, that we’ve lived, and that we’re growing it’s proof you’re human, That line was overall powerful because it suggests that without pain, we wouldn’t understand joy, love, or strength in the same way.
This line“you choose to bleed out in serene silence.” is also strong because it shows how people sometimes carry pain quietly without letting anyone see. It made me think about how a lot of people suffer in silence, not because they’re numb, but because they’ve accepted that pain is part of who they are. That kind of quiet strength choosing to endure instead of erase is something I really respect, and it made me look at my own pain differently.
The line “Pain is human” is powerful and true because it’s so simple but holds so much meaning. It reminds me that every person, no matter how different, experiences pain, and it’s something that connects all of us. It also made me realize that pain shapes our character , andd it teaches empathy, resilience, and depth. And the phrase It shows that pain isn’t always loud or dramatic sometimes it’s quiet, internal, and deeply personal. That line really stuck with me because it describes a type of strength that isn’t always seen or understood, but it’s real and powerful in its own way
