William Herschel discovered Uranus today, in 1781. Unlike previous astronomers who believed it to be a star, Herschel was able to use a telescope (being the first to discover a planet with a telescope, in fact) to prove that the celestial body was in fact a planet. However, he would actually name the planet Georgium Sidus (Georgian Planet, after King George III of England); after its discovery, a German astronomer named Johann Bode would propose to name it Uranus instead, and this name would eventually stick.
