What is art? How do we determine what art is?
These are complicated questions that can’t be answered easily or maybe can’t be answered at all if you take the stance that art can be anything one finds art to be. Either way, it can be educational to look into the thought process of art curators and how they determine what art is and how they choose the works of art to choose to display.
One thing that stands out about the process of curation is the fact that it is not a one size fits all approach. One curator might be looking for an art piece that is not only beautiful but sends a message, and another curator might be looking for an art piece that is especially about the sea. Knowing this can be helpful for both artists and spectators as it illustrates how subjective the art we see in a gallery or museum can be. Moreover, it can help an artist gain perspective as to why maybe their art isn’t being displayed.
