On Wednesday, a Turkish court sentenced reporter Seda Taskin to seven and a half years in prison for news stories deemed to be “terrorist propaganda.” On Friday, hundreds of people attended the funeral of slain Bulgarian television journalist Viktoria Marinova. And today marks two weeks since independent journalist Jamal Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and never walked out.

Evidently, it’s a dangerous time to be a free-thinker—even the U.S. President has attacked the media as the “enemy of the people.” That said, I don’t particularly enjoy beginning the week with harrowing news, but as Mr. Khashoggi’s fiancee wrote, “his loss is not just mine but that of every person with a conscience and moral compass.” The writers of the Boylan Blog endeavor to raise questions, to share our ideas, and to evoke interest in our passions, so it seems appropriate to at least remark on the risks faced by those who seek to do the same—to acknowledge those individuals with the audacity to comment on issues of importance, who use their superb, enviable writing skills for good, and who ultimately suffer for it. President Trump is mistaken—reporters are, in fact, the heroes of our time.
