For those of you who have to write essays or need tutoring for midterms, the Learning Center is a great resource for students, and there’s no shame in seeking out help! Now on to announcements:

First and foremost, the English Majors’ Open Mic is this Tuesday, October 24th from 12:30-2:00 in the Woody Tanger Auditorium! If you don’t have anything to perform, feel free to come by anyway, and bring some friends while you’re at it! Remember, you don’t need to be an experienced writer to perform. The sign up sheet is on the door of 3416 Boylan.

On November 1st, Andrea J. Ritchie, one of the leaders behind #SayHerName, will be having a discussion in the Woody Tanger Auditorium from 11AM-1PM. There will be a reading and Q&A session, followed by a conversation on how resistance strategies shift if we bring police violence against women of color into the center of activist movements.

Next, there’s a few academic and artistic opportunities for students interested.

  • Mellon Transfer Student Research Program: The MTRP is for transfer students interested in conducting research. It provides workshops, research guidance, and mentors, and those accepted into the program receive college credit as well as a stipend of $700. If you’re interested in filling out the application, or have questions, visit the program’s office in 3114 Boylan. The deadline to apply is November 16, 2017 and applications must be submitted to 3238 Boylan.
  • The CUNY Pipeline Program: The Pipeline Program is designed to provide educational and financial support to CUNY undergrads from groups currently underrepresented in our nation’s universities who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in preparation for college-level teaching and advanced research. Applications are online and the deadline to apply is January 12, 2018. For more information, see the flyer below. PipelineOneSheet-Oct2017-1.jpg
  • Art Submissions Wanted: The Women’s History Month Committee is hosting an art showcase in the Spring semester that celebrates and honors feminist icons and is seeking art submissions from students of who they believe should be honored! Students do not need to be art majors or have any art experience to submit. If you’re interested, please email them at womenshistorymonthbc@gmail.com by October 27th, but note that you do not need to submit a piece by that date, October 27th is just to start discussing who you’d like to honor.
  • Magner Career Center Spring Internship Stipend: The Magner Career Center offers stipend awards up to $5,000 for the fall, spring and summer semesters. Click here to learn more. Applications for the spring are due October 31st.

Lastly, if you have some time during Common Hours and want to work on your writing, come check out Writers’ Circle! It’s student-led, and meets Tuesdays and Thursday from 12:30-1:30PM. Like the Open Mic, you do not need to be an experienced writer to join!

Have a great week!
