Hi there!
And welcome to the Boylan Blog! First off I’d like to invite everyone to Writer’s Circle — every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30–1:30, in room 2307 Boylan! You don’t need to have attended previous meetings to come by, and it’s a great way to work on your writing outside of the classroom.
You might be able to get course credit for ENGL 5100 through these two volunteer mentorships:
Writopia Lab, a nonprofit organization that holds creative writing workshops for kids ages 6–18, is looking for volunteer mentors for their Joy and Literacy in Afterschool program. Volunteers will work alongside instructors from October 2017 to June 2018 in various afterschool programs, for a weekly 1.5 hour workshop. Experience working with middle school students, especially in English and writing, is a plus. Apply through this form with your resume and a 500–1000 word writing sample about why you want to help young students become better, more confident writers. (“This can be a story, an essay, or a personal statement; feel free to be creative.”) This is a great opportunity to enrich your teaching experience and provide positive guidance to burgeoning creative writers.
Writopia Lab is also looking for volunteers for their Write to Recognition program! Volunteer tutor mentors will be matched with low-literacy writers and work with them individually for an hour a week (from 2–10 hours/week), focusing on grammar and mechanics in their creative writing. Applicants working towards or holding a degree in English and/or Education, and who can be supportive and enthusiastic about young writers’ work, are preferred. For their older students, Writopia Lab needs volunteers with experience in Regents and standardized test prep, high school equivalency tests, resume building, and admissions essays. This is also a nine-month commitment, plus monthly check-in meetings. Apply here!
For other opportunities, visit the Magner Career Center (1303 James), and check out the Brooklyn College Job & Internship Fair on October 20th. If you are applying for spring internships, you can also apply for an internship stipend through the Magner Center by October 31st, and check for external funding. Don’t forget to look through the Fall Workshop Schedule for even more events, and for information about the Job Fair. Watch these videos for more: x y z
There are plenty of other events happening around campus throughout September, too: acclaimed author Sandra Cisneros will be in Woody Tanger Auditorium today from 11–12:50!
And next Tuesday, September 26th, the Women’s Center (in 227 New Ingersoll) will be celebrating three women writers during their “B.C.’s Got Talent” open house: Keisha-Gaye Anderson, Rosamond S. King, and Nava Renek!
Don’t forget that this Tuesday (September 19th) is a CUNY Thursday schedule, and that there are no classes Wednesday through Friday of this week for observance of Rosh Hashanah.
