Hey world, it’s me again, yep… that guy. I’ve come to once again jibber-jabber about something or the other (rhymes). This week I worked on “The Canvas.” Although it wasn’t presented this way, I saw it as my duty to bring something to the canvas (to the table), that would be sure to make everyone second guess what exactly is on their screen. Not only that, but I wanted them to stare and ponder on the intent of not only the artist but of the art piece itself – art that gives itself it’s own identity and agency. With this in mind, I will warn you all (especially the aliens)… Because the art form I’ve chosen is none other than magical realism!

By none other than Rob Gonsalves! (Probably not as dramatic). Now, I know what you’re thinking. I know what you’re alllll thinking. “Why does he keep mentioning aliens? I just don’t get it.” Well, I’m going to be frank with you all, I… I can’t answer that… because I, myself, don’t know why I continue to bring them up. On the other hand, (the left one) what I can discuss is my take on this painting.

Let’s start with the name of the piece, “The phenomenon of floating.” Well, what does the name imply? It implies that the act of floating is being actualized after having been in doubt (the concept of doubt being connected to the word phenomenon through definition). The peculiarity of this floating action is very sensible. “But why?” you ask. To which I respond, “because it makes sense –

because the subject of the painting is floating in two different mediums at once.” The subject is doing just that, floating, both on top of the water and in space. (Side note, I’ve never liked the reality that language speakers (yep, that broad) are okay with the fact that you can both float on something (one good example of what I mean is floating on water), yet also, you can float in something (yep, you guessed it, an excellent example of what I mean is floating in space…wait… you didn’t guess that?

What’s even more peculiar is that if you take a step back (seeing as to how I’m the writer I’m like 2 steps back right now, you know, speaking in relative dimensions or what have you) and realize what the painting truly is, you’ll realize that art, or more specifically a painting, is a medium in and of itself. In other words, the girl (no I didn’t just assume HER gender…well… maybe) is also floating in the medium of paint. What do I mean by this? Well, she’s in the painting, correct? Buttttt, (and this is where it gets trippy)

she’s also on the surface of the painting, seeing as to how she’s in a two-dimensional surface/plane (up, down, left, right – by definition). In other words, just like in the painting, she’s in something, while also on something. Yep, this means that in the perspective of the subject she’s floating in and on two mediums, yet in ours, she’s also in and on two more.

Anyways, let’s move on to the background and foreground of the piece – just kidding, I think I’ve said enough nonsense in one post.

… I wonder if I used enough gif material.
PS. I decided I’d include a few more of my favorites from his collection. Oh, and sorry about the “misleading” title… but isn’t that what people do?
