Fan Art
Artists can find inspiration everywhere. So why should the exploration of well-beloved creations be any different?
Fandom art has been a staple of fan culture for almost as long as people have been fans. However, fan art has faced several struggles over the years to find recognition of merit. Often, artists are not taken seriously for their works because they “recycle” characters and events. On the other hand, sometimes fan creations face copyright concerns when fan artists’ works “pose a threat” to the original works’ creator.
Some organizations, like Fan Works Are Fair Use, focus on preserving proper copyright law regulations of fair use for fandom and work to preserve fan art’s place in fan culture without the fear of lawful infractions. Their website reads:
We believe that fan works provide tremendous value to the people who create and enjoy them. Fanfiction, fan films, and other forms of fan art provide consumers of popular media with an outlet for creative expression and exploration of identity using popular story as a context. Beloved universes and characters are reshaped through the lens of individual perspective, allowing writers and artists to hone their craft in a familiar, meaningful setting.
We believe that fan works add value to the source materials on which they’re based. While fan works obviously do not alter the original works, they do help shape and energize the culture that surrounds popular narratives. That energy helps to perpetuate the presence of the original work in the cultural zeitgeist, ultimately leading to more enthusiasm, passion, and (of course) sales.
So, this post is meant to serve as a tribute to fan art for what it is: unique and important art. As you may have been able to tell from my “Currently Watching” post last week, I am a bit of a Harry Potter fan, and I will be focusing on this fandom’s fan art below to showcase why fan art is both fun and important, and why it should be protected.
