It’s Still Technically Winter and I Re-learned how to Knit

(H/t to Maggie and to my mom for partial inspiration.)

I don’t remember where my sister learned to crochet, but my mom taught her and me to knit sometime in upper elementary school. I began a scarf, pulling my stitches far too tightly until I abandoned it after about 10 inches. My sister managed to crochet a small blanket.

Our aunt, in my mom’s words, has always been the best out of the siblings at knitting and at crocheting and other needlework. She has often sent us some of the things she’s made, occasionally giving or mailing over slippers of various sizes, purses that she’s made, and blankets and tablecloths. She even knows how to make lace.

My mom recently took up knitting again, and has graduated from scarves to hats, prompting me to begin again as well. By now we’ve amassed a small collection of mostly scarves, and bought circular needles but haven’t used them for circular knitting yet. And though for a couple of days it seemed that spring was fast approaching, we managed to wear the knit hats some more.

My grandmother would make my mom vests when she was younger. This winter, I’ve helped my mom make beanies and am on my way to making my own, once I finish the scarf I’m working on. My mom and I have watched instructional videos on YouTube to help us along, and it’s become a way of spending time together.
