Currently watching: “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl”
Issa Rae is an actress, writer and director. She produced, directed and starred in her award winning web series, “Awkward Black Girl.” This show is about a young black woman named Jay who is stuck at a dead end job, surrounded by co- workers who aren’t worthy of her space nor time. While some of the comedy is subtle at times, the cringe worthy awkward situations that Jay finds herself in, is nothing short of hilarious. I also love how Issa explores struggles specific to young black women. In the first episode she flashes back to when her boyfriend became disinterested (and then left), after she decided to cut off all of her hair and go natural. It is something that black women who decide to go natural, go through in real life. She also touches on the complexities of interracial dating, when she dates a white guys named Jay, aptly named “White Jay.” Issa Rae also has her hand in several youtube series such as, “Roomie, Lover, Friends,” “Let Leslie a Tell it,” “The Choir,” and my favourite, “Ratchet Piece Theatre.” She is also set to develop a comedy series for HBO similar to “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” along with Larry Wilmore.
