During last week’s Writer’s Circle, Jackie and I explored the world of cliche creative writing prompts. We focused on the topic of color poetry; the prompt was to write about a colour or many colours from a unique perspective. So cliche, yet so much fun. You should join us every Tuesday in 2307 Boylan during common hours. Here is the piece I wrote for the prompt:
The cushions were grey.
From afar it looked brown, or dirty, or brown.
But they were grey. You knew.
Your face was on its side when you first noticed.
You weren’t praying or playing.
Your body bent like worship.
Deep inside the grey,
You saw red. Not red red, but dull red.
PUSH.
Your forehead banged against a grey strap connected to a grey clip connected to something else that was grey.
Your face turned grey.
When you smelled brown,
You closed your eyes and saw red, not dull red.
You tasted brown.
It wasn’t grey.
From afar this looked dirty.
You weren’t praying, or playing.
