I grew up with Disney. One of the first movies my parents took me to see in the theaters was “The Little Mermaid”, and I sat openmouthed as this spectacular underwater world unfolded before my eyes. In the months afterward, my friends and I would sing all of its songs during recess, re-enacting our favorite scenes. I still know the lyrics of “Part of that World” by heart. And I sing it to my children during bedtime and on Friday afternoons when we clean the apartment together.
But the songs of today’s Disney films just can’t compare to the classics of “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast”, or “Aladdin”. In the past ten years something has been lost, some sort of musical magic.
And then I saw “Frozen”.
Now, every night before bedtime, my children beg me to put on “Let It Go” so they can fall asleep as Idina Menzel sings them into their dreams. It’s not only my children who have been mesmerized, but I too have fallen in love with this song. I love its emotion, the desire for freedom that it expresses, and the idea of embracing one’s true self, rather than hiding it away behind closed doors.
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.
