I was thinking about the way we consume food. Although we eat for the sustenance of our livelihood, we indulge our taste buds for the pleasure of indulgence. I was reminded of this indulgence when my church had a dinner for every volunteer. Pounded Yam with Egusi Soup, Rice and Peas with Jerk Chicken or Curry Chicken and Jellof Rice with stew chicken were some of the things on the Menu. My favorite was the Pounded Yam and Egusi Soup. I couldn’t stop eating even when I felt stuffed to capacity. Pounded Yam and Egusi is popular in West Africa. Egusi Soup is made with Melon Seeds, Spinach, Chopped Goat Meat and Dried Fish, while the Pounded Yam is made with Yam Flour.
Eating my favorite African dish brought back memories of growing up in Nigeria. It feels great to know where you come from. Although culture doesn’t define you, it is a gateway into your soul.
